After a hectic time of many varied events the week
culminated in the Grand Illuminated procession along the Southend
Seafront. The day began with a Queens tea at the Civic Centre. We were
joined by Courts from Ashingdon, Basildon and Pitsea, Burnham on Crouch,
Hornsey, Stanford and Corringham, Wickford and representatives from the

After an excellent tea the Mayor Councillor Ann Holland and her escort
judged the Court of the Day which was won by Ashingdon. Then it was down
to the Seafront on board an open top bus, it was a little bit windy but
great fun. The Courts then joined their floats and the judging took place.
Burnham on Crouch 1st, Stanford and Corringham 2nd
and Ashingdon 3rd. The Seafront was packed with people to watch
a brilliant procession. At the halfway break there was a fantastic
firework display. The Southend Court then watched the parade pass and

Uk Carnival Competition |
I have just
returned from Disneyland Paris, where I was proud to represent
Southend-On-Sea in the UK Carnival Queen competition. The competition is
open to any reigning carnival courts, so there were girls from all over
the UK there with me. We were judged over four days, starting on the
ferry from Dover to Calais, where we had an interview and were presented
with our sashes by the captain. It was a full on timetable, with
events packed in from morning to evening. On the first night we went to
the Buffallo Bill's show, line dancing with cowboys and learning how to
play some traditional wild west games. We also went on an evening tour of
Paris, seeing the Eiffel tower, Arc d'Triumphe, the Obelisk and many other
famous sights. Walking around in a sash meant that we drew a lot of
attention to ourselves, with many people asking 'Who are you?' and 'Why
are you wearing a sash?' I was then able to explain about Southend-On-Sea
and why I was in Paris. I even had a couple of people ask for a photo with
me!! The selection evening was on the last night, so everyone in the
competition was dressed in their carnival dresses and regalia. We had to
present ourselves to a panel of five judges and answer questions. After
having to talk to many people around Paris and in Disneyland I found that
I was a much more confident speaker. Unfortunately I did not win the title
of UK Carnival Queen, but would recommend the trip to anyone in the
future.

2009 Relay
4 Life |
After months of preparation, Southend hosted
it's first Cancer Relay for Life on the 5th and 6th of September 2009.
This 24 hour event involved "teams" camping out overnight
at Garon Park. Each team had to have at least one member making their way
round the track at all times, meanwhile the other team members were
selling cakes and running stalls such as "apple bobbing" and
"pick the lolly" to boost their sponsorship money. His
Worship the Mayor opened the event on Saturday and a group of 10 cancer
survivors walked a lap of honour. Speaking to team members on the Sunday
morning I found that their highlight of the weekend was ''the candle of
hope ceremony, it was really emotional and many people were crying''. The
team which raised the most money for the event ( over £3000! ) were team
SYC, a team made entirely from Southend Youth Council members. At the
beginning of their fundraising team captain Joe Knock promised, ''if we
raise over £1500 I will have my legs waxed!''. So, myself and the
deputy youth mayor were given the honour of "waxing" Joe's legs
at 9:00am on Sunday morning!. I had a really fun morning at the Relay
for life, especially walking my own lap of the track and taking part in
the ''boxercising'' event to wake the teams up. Next year I
definitely want to get involved as the event raised thousands of pounds
for cancer research and it's a fun way to do it!!
